What we believe
The SMCAH Philosophy
The nursing faculty share beliefs about the person, nursing, health, environment, teaching and learning, and nursing education.
Person
People are biopsychosocial and spiritual beings whose healthcare needs change throughout life, from conception to death, within a changing environment. A person is a living system with the capacity for free will in decisions.
Nursing
Nursing protects, promotes and optimizes health and abilities. It also prevents illness and injury, relieves suffering through diagnosing and treating human responses, and advocates for individuals, families, communities and populations.
Health
Health is more than the absence of disease. It includes physical, mental and social well-being. Every person has a right to healthcare and to resources that let them take an active role in managing their care and reach their full health potential.
Environment
People constantly interact with their surroundings, which include social, physical, ethical, moral and cultural influences. Nurses use nursing judgment to recognize these influences and build plans that help clients use learned coping skills and improve how they interact with their environment.
Teaching and learning
Effective teaching combines art and science to create learning environments with meaningful experiences. Learners take responsibility for actively engaging in their education and continuing to learn throughout life. Faculty, staff and the College share responsibility for developing a professional identity in which learners can succeed.
Nursing education
Nursing education combines physical sciences, nursing concepts and technical skills so students can meet the competencies set by professional and legal regulation of nursing. Students apply critical reasoning grounded in evidence-based practice and practice teamwork and open communication.
Human flourishing
By the strategic application of evidence-based nursing knowledge and skills to meet the diverse healthcare needs of their clients, communities and themselves throughout the life span.
